Mercedes-Benz GLA Crossover Concept

Move over BMX X1 and Audi Q3, the Mercedes-Benz GLA concept crossover is here and looking a lot sexier than the two of you combined. The Mercedes-Benz GLA is set to make an appearance at the 2013 Auto China show in Shanghai but official images of the compact crossover concept have made their way online. The Mercedes GLA concept is looking like it’s pretty much ready to hit the show room floors and the production model will be revealed at the Frankfurt Motor Show later in the year.

The GLA concept crossover is built on the underpinnings of the A-Class hatchback and measures in at 4.38 meters (172.4 inches) in length, 1.97 meters (77.6 inches) in width, and 1.57 meters (61.8 inches) in height while the wheelbase will remain the same as the A-Class at 105.9 inches.

We don’t know how capable the Mercedes-Benz GLA is yet but solely based on looks, it’s a rugged and capable piece of machinery featuring muscular fenders and riding on massive 20-inch alloy wheels. We’ll learn about the actual driving dynamics in a few months most likely but it definitely comes ahead in the looks department compared to the immediate competition.

The interior of the Mercedes GLA will have borrowed pieces from the A-Class such as the dashboard but there will be subtle changes to materials and trim pieces including a unique instrument panel. Of course we should expect both the interior and exterior to be toned down a bit when the actual production model goes up for sale. And one cool feature that this concept GLA has that the production model won’t is the laser beam projectors in the headlights which are able to project pictures and film onto a screen or similar surfaces. That would be pretty cool feature to show off on a first date. You can pull up to a large building after hours and watch a movie or something.

For the powerplant, the GLA concept uses the same 2.0-liter turbocharged four cylinder motor as the A-250 which will produce 208 horsepower. A 7-speed dual-clutch 7G-DCT transmission will be used to send the power to its 4MATIC all-wheel drive system. Once the Mercedes-Benz GLA is ready for production, more engine options will be available including GLA-45 AMG producing 300 horsepower.

For now, enjoy the pictures and more details will be available soon.
