Shaving Tips to Get the Perfect Wet Shave

The average man spends about half a year in total shaving throughout his life, but how much time have you spent learning the best way to perform a wet shave? You’re reading this, which is a good start as many men don’t have a shaving routine that’s best for the clean look they are going for or for their skin.

Tip 1: Jump in the shower.

The first thing you can do to make your shaving experience more enjoyable and effective is to get in the shower first. A hot shower will open up the hair follicles and make your skin and hair softer, which will make the shaving process easier.

Tip 2: Don’t go against the grain.

Some people believe that shaving against the grain is the best way to get a close shave. Unfortunately, this more often causes an increased chance of ingrown hairs and irritable skin. If you don’t know which way your hair grows, let it grow out for a few days and rub your hand up and down your face. You’ll be able to tell which way is rougher, and this is what you want to avoid.

Tip 3: Use a good razor.

There are dozens of razor ads out there claiming they are the best, but in reality, it doesn’t matter if your razor has one blade or eight. They just need to be sharp and well-maintained. If you’re interested in what the best straight razors for beginners are, then we definitely recommend doing your research as a good straight razor can change your shaving life forever.

Tip 4: Stop with the after-shave.

After-shaves are traditionally used to close up your pores after shaving and sterilize any cuts you may have sustained. Unfortunately, they are also known to cause redness and irritation of the skin. Rather than the traditional after-shave, try an alcohol-free balm that has the same effect without the negatives.

Tip 5: Keep a steady hand.

As you’re shaving, make sure to give yourself enough time. A rushed shave will more often than not lead to a bad shave where you’ve missed spots at best and cuts at worst. Give yourself plenty of time and use slow controlled strokes a couple of inches long at most for the best shave.

Tip 6: Don’t use heavy strokes.

If you have a thick beard, then you might become frustrated and try to press down hard to make sure you’re getting all the hairs. This won’t help, though, and will only lead to redness and irritation. If you’re struggling, then it’s most likely the sharpness and quality of your razor that’s at fault. Try a different brand and make sure you’re using a light touch.

Tip 7: Rinse the blades.

To get the best shave, make sure to rinse your blade in water between every stroke. This will remove the build-up of hair and shaving cream, and will make sure you’re getting full contact with the blades of your razor for the best shave possible.
