Creating Your Very Own “Collectors Cave”

Collecting is a fantastic hobby, a way for you to showcase your passion and your dedication for a particular nice or interest.

This can be anything from stamps and postcards, all the way through to collecting classic cars and film memorabilia.

I too also have the collectors bug, as I collect classic video games and consoles from the 80’s and 90’s. However, from personal experience I can say that space can quickly be taken up within any home without a dedicated storage room.

Before I knew it, I had boxes piling up on my high gloss laminate floor with my console collection being preserved however not being used; the reason I acquired them in the first place.

Of course my situation may be different to other collectors. Yet taking the example of a film collector – say you have an original film poster from the Steve McQueen classic Bullet just rolled up in your loft. This is such a waste and surely you would want to put such a rare find on display.

This is where the collectors cave comes in. For those lucky enough to have a spare room within your home, you have the opportunity to convert this room to be a dedicated space. Showcasing your passion and interest in your chosen subject.

Now for different collectors the needs will be different, for instance someone who collects sports memorabilia will have different needs to someone who collects Magic the Gathering cards for instance.

Yet laying the groundwork will still be the same. This is ensuring that your collection room is as safe and easy to maintain as possible, reducing the chance of accidents and breakages.

From personal experience the room that I now use as a games/collection room did have a plush red carpet within it. However, given the nature of my collection (electricals), the carpet was the first thing that needed to go.

This is because electricals especially retro games consoles gather an alarming amount of dust, so with a carpet the dust build-up will become unmanageable. This is doubled by the fact that with the heavy hoovering and cleaning required could lead to accident and expensive replacement.

So the carpet had to go, however what would I replace it with?

Given how I was a dual games/collectors room, I wanted to blend durability, comfort and ease of maintenance.

I also wanted the new floor to be light on my wallet as I was saving up for a new arcade cabinet at the time.

Thankfully there was a solution, oak laminate flooring.

This flooring blends the natural charm and comfort of traditional solid wood flooring, with enhanced flexibility and user friendliness.

That last part is especially true as once it had arrived, by the end of the next day both me and my friend (who was giving me a hand) had the floor down.

This was thanks to its remarkably simple snap click layout and the fact that no further room modification was needed. Along with this I was able to find a colour that suited my personal tastes.

As such dust build-up was significantly reduced, meaning I could quickly clean the room without much fuss; protecting my collection in the process through reduced risk of accidents.
