Battlefield 3: Aftermath – After an Earthquake, the Crossbow Reigns Supreme

It’s been a while since Dice released a new trailer, but one thing is for sure… they haven’t lost their knack for it; this new launch trailer for Battlefield 3: Aftermath is every bit as awesome as the videos they released during the lead up to the main game.

If you haven’t heard of Aftermath before, in short, it’s the latest expansion to Battlefield 3. All you really need to know is that it takes place in a city that was recently devastated by a massive earthquake, and that in this quasi-paralel universe, the US military has decided to give their soldiers crossbows. As you’re undoubtedly aware, there’s nothing more devastating against an armored, armored soldier than the bolt from a crossbow.

Though I can’t help but poke fun at Dice’s decision to add a crossbow of all weapons, it does seem like it’s going to be a pretty fun weapon. Perhaps I shouldn’t even be that surprised, given that I wrote an entire article on the upcoming wave of games featuring bows and crossbows. It was inevitable, I suppose… perhaps it’s just best to embrace it.

Also worth mentioning is the new Scavenger Mode, which seems like an interesting twist on Gun Master, and a bit of a throwback to shooters of yesteryear to boot. I’m sure you all remember having to scavenge for more and more powerful weapons in older multiplayer games like Unreal Tournament, and perhaps this new mode will help recapture the feeling of that. I for one think it’s a good move. The part of the trailer that shows this off really gave me a wasteland, post apocalyptic vibe, and I think that’s a good thing. Hell, perhaps Dice will one day decide to do a full blown post apocalyptic multiplayer shooter! Well, a man can dream…

Where da Aftermath Crossbow at?

Word on the street is that Battlefield 3: Aftermath is already on, well… the street. Head over to your bug ridden installation of Origin and go download it right away. I’ll be joining you right after I finish beating Hotline Miami. It’s improving my twitch shooter abilities by many, many fold.

Lastly, if you don’t already have a copy of Battlefield 3 – the base game you need to play these lovely expansions – then you can order that online for $33.52.
