Trapped Under Glass – Thousands of Plastic People Hold Up Floor

Check out this awesome art installation featuring 180,000 plastic people supporting a glass floor. It is- unsurprisingly- called Floor, and it’s put together by Do Ho Suh who is- surprisingly- not related to Long Duk Dong. Each of the pvc figures are cast in a random combination of color, gender and features, and are embedded in polyurethane resin to keep everything from immediately collapsing the art aficionado into a pit full of giant shards of glass and grasping Lilliputians. When you look at it that way, this thing is pretty freakin’ amazing.

It’s not as though I’m expecting everything on the planet to kill me: it’s just that I happen to have an excellent imagination, and stuff like Floor is just too good as fuel to pass up. Each of the 180,000 plastic people were placed by hand in a crowded mob, symbolizing ethnicity and hardship and togetherness and all of the struggles we face as a unified humanity. That’s effing fantastic, don’t get me wrong- however, I can’t get over the childlike glee the idea of a sea of tiny people being trapped under my monster feet brings me.

If you’re not into re-enacting Godzilla everyday in your living room, then other upsides are that from afar, this thing totally looks like the deepest seventies shag in the most popular seventies shades of brown. So, if pimping out your place, recreating this bad boy you get all the benefits of…that…and nothing will ever fall in there to be lost until the nineties.

All sarcasm and useless speculation aside, how tempting this would be to put together with other things? If you’re into green and reliving your childhood you could do army men, though I would question the structural integrity of those considering how many have died horrible deaths at the hands of babes. But in all honesty, once you got over the immense amounts of time and likely the very high cost involved, amazing textural flooring that would be as easily cleaned as hardwood would be so excellent.

Wine Corks (how alcohol can support the weight of the world? Perhaps a bit insensitive,) art supplies, poker chips, beer caps, assorted guy paraphernalia- you name it. Something to think about for the man cave, anyhow.

Author, Designer, and "that girl your mother warned you about." Looking good seems to be my job, whether it's working with the site design, or a number of other more interesting capacities. I have a ridiculous sense of humour and a brutal sense of honesty- you'll see a lot of that coming through in my writing, so don't say I didn't warn you if I somehow manage to offend you AND hurt your feelings at the same time. On the plus side, it makes my dating and advice columns a lot more pertinent to an unfinished man in the real world.

    • I think that would look phenomenal…but man, would that get pricy. It’s about-what? $7 on a flight these days? and you’d need about 35 bottles per tile, and depending on the size of the room….
However, I’m willing to be put on the no-fly list for excessive public drunkenness in pursuit of the perfect floor.

      • Hmmm well maybe for the sake of saving travel privileges and possibly liver could use beer bottle lids instead.. Would also go perfect with a working beer keg computer idea I came up with years ago…
