Amazing Paper Sculptures by Peter Callesen

Peter Callesen is a Danish artist who creates incredibly complex paper sculptures using only standard acid-free A4 paper and glue. Born in 1967, he has a long history of creating these little snapshots of reality, many of which leave me with a distinct sense of Blade Runner déjà vu. Why? It probably has a little something to do with the origami unicorn that Gaff hands Deckard in the movie. I assure you, the association is a good thing.

All of his tiny sculptures are extremely intricate, especially given the simple materials he uses to make them. How he manages to fold and cut the pieces with such precision, I would love to know. Peter’s exceptional skill aside, each of the pieces are extremely interesting in their own right.

If I had to choose a favorite, it would definitely be Eisenmeer – the ship that’s sunk just before the icy water line. There’s something in particular about the level of detail on that one that really impresses me, and I love how he’s managed to instill such character and ambience to the scene. It really makes me wonder what caused the crash, and what’s lurking beneath the icy waves.

You’ll find more of Peter’s work on his official website. What I’ve included in this article is only a small sampling of the many pieces he’s created over the years, all of which are equally impressive.
