Zenith Christophe Colombe Hurricane Grand Voyage Watch

The Zenith Christophe Colomb watch was first introduced in 2010, the watch’s design was inspired by marine chronometer instruments and it was named after Christopher Columbus.  Over the years Zenith has introduced several versions of the watch, like the Academy Christophe Colomb Hurricane.  Today we get to look at yet another version of these beautiful watches, the Zenith Christophe Colomb Hurricane Grand Voyage.

In my opinion, this latest version is the best looking… so far, especially on the back side.  The caseback is the star of the show here, too bad one would have to take the watch off to show its beauty, but then again, these watches are rarely worn, they’re more like fine pieces of artwork that are only shown to special guests.

We’ll start with the caseback which features engraving, enameling, and mini paintings.  At the left of the gyroscope bubble there’s an engraved portrait of Christopher Columbus and on the right side, there is a small sextant, a nautical instrument used to measure the angle between two visible objects.  Above the gyroscope are beautifully enameled sails and masts from the Santa Maria, the flagship from Columbus’ 1492 voyage across the Atlantic.  Behind all of this is the blue ocean and the horizon with a setting sun, which happens to be one of the golden gears from the mechanical movement.

The front of the Zenith Christophe Colomb Hurricane Grand Voyage watch is also beautiful, but it can’t be compared to the back.  There are three sub-dials on the main dial, at 12 o’clock is the dial for the minutes/hours, 9 o’clock has the seconds dial, and at the 4 o’clock position is the dial for the power reserve.  The gyroscopic-balanced regulator also gets a touch-up with a new bottom, that’s painted like the southern hemisphere of the globe.

The Zenith Christophe Colomb Hurricane Grand Voyage watches come in 45 mm rose gold cases that are 14.8 mm thick.  The watches are powered by Zenith’s in-house El Primero 8805 mechanical movements with 50 hour power-reserve.  The watches are limited to 10 pieces only, as for prices, well…. don’t ask.  I’m guessing these watches will be priced north of the $300,000 mark.  Via: Zenith
