What’s Old is New: Retro Boardshorts are In & How-to-Wear Tips for Men

When it comes to beachwear, most men assume that throwing on a pair of boardshorts and heading down to the beach is all there is to it. Trust me when I say that women aren’t the only ones that need to consider the type of beachwear they put on to flatter their body types. Down on the shores of Miami Beach, I’ve seen my fair share of men who may have thought they looked hot, but were actually far from it. So if you’re really looking to impress the ladies this summer, please take heed of these beach  fashion dos and don’ts (& ladies, help your man out. You know you want him freshly dressed).

1.  Do Know the Latest Trends

While you want to stand out from the other men on the beach, you don’t want to stick out like a sore thumb. So before you go dusting off those old swim trunks from a decade ago, it’s a good idea to know the latest trends.

·  Retro-Style Boardshorts are In – You might have thought that short shorts would make you look unattractive, but that is far from the truth. Retro shorts are making a huge comeback this summer. These retro boardshorts with bold prints and patterns are super vintage and are really hot in this year’s style.

·  Prints Help You Stand Out – You don’t have to go with the basic black, red, or blue swimwear this summer. Prints are all the rage this year and quite frankly can really draw the attention of onlookers. From retro prints like floral and tie-dye to modern prints like stripes and spirals, the sky is the limit. If you’re a bigger guy who wants a print, go for smaller prints on a softer color pallet.

2.  Do Dress According to Your Body Type

Not every guy that hits the beach is tall, chiseled and beach-body ready. Now there’s certainly nothing wrong with that because we all come in different shapes and sizes. Regardless, when you’re looking to turn a few heads, it’s important that you wear attire that is flattering to your body type. Here’s a few general rules:

· Tall – Tall men should opt for a swim trunks style that accents their legs but doesn’t make them look like a giant. Going for boardshorts that stop just above the knee gives the body a more proportioned look that keeps the legs from appearing too long.

· Short – If you’re shorter, you have to be careful with wearing swim trunks that are long. Instead, go for something that stops mid-thigh, like Original Watermen’s retro trunks do. This elongates the legs and gives the illusion of a bit more height.

· Slim – If you’re slim and want to look a bit bigger, go for a bold print or color as it can give the illusion of girth.

· Big – Solid and darker colored shorts are your best bet. This helps to streamline your silhouette and conceal any unwanted bulges.

3.  Don’t Wear Them Baggy

There’s nothing worse than a guy at the beach in oversized shorts. To be quite honest, aside from it looking silly and usually showing more than people want to see, you run the risk of losing your trunks should a wave hit you the wrong way.

4.  Steer Clear of Certain Fabrics

Soggy shorts cause chafing and are oftentimes very unattractive. Try sticking to fabrics that are at least 75% synthetic as they tend to dry faster. This includes polyester or nylon.

5. Don’t Forget to Accessorize

Although your board shorts are the focal point at the beach, you don’t want to skip the accessories. You’ll want to get a nice pair of flip flops to compliment the shorts, and a neat button up or nice tee shirt for when you’re just walking along the boardwalk or around town. Throw on some cool sunglasses and maybe a waterproof watch and you’re ready to go. You don’t have to look like you’re participating in fashion week at the beach, but you do want to look your best because you never know who you might run into.

Beach fashion is not just for the women. If you’re looking to catch the attention of the ladies this summer or even just out-style your friends, you’d better bring your A game. By keeping these fashion tips in mind, you’re sure to turn a few heads and get the attention you’re after. Above all else, enjoy yourself and have fun.
