The good news for the Datsun fans including myself is that Nissan is bringing the Datsun name back to life! The bad news is that the new Datsun known as the Go Supermini is nothing like we’d want it to be. The fans want something cool, retro, great handling, and good looking. But Nissan wanted something basic, affordable, and competitive which is exactly what the original Datsun was intended to be.
The Datsun nameplate hasn’t been around since the early 1980’s but now it’s back and ready to sell some units staring off first in India. The Datsun Go Supermini was revealed yesterday in New Delhi and will be developed and manufactured locally in India. The vehicle is expected to go on sale early next year and will have a base price of $6,700.
After launching the vehicle there, other markets will get the car as well including South Africa, Indonesia, and Russia. The Datsun models will be individually developed for the different markets but the overall concept will be the same which is to create affordable and competitive entry-level vehicles.
The Datsun Go Supermini is based on the Nissan Micra which is also built in India. The Go Supermini and Micra both share the same wheelbase length. The Go Supermini will feature a 1.2-liter petrol engine, a five-speed manual transmission, and will be front wheel drive.
No details on what kind of power the motor produces but you can bet it’s not very much. I’m disappointed with the vehicle but its’ kind of cool that Datsuns are once again on the road.
