Dyson AM06 12″ Desk Fan Review

We have reviewed pretty much every type of consumer product Dyson currently sells. To say we’re fans would be an understatement, I personally love the designs of their product and the technology used to make them stand apart from the crowd.

We did full hands-on reviews of the of the Dyson Air Multiplier fans, which included the AMO1 10” table fan and the larger AM02 fan. I have been using both of these fans over the years and I’m still impressed with their design. Every time I have a large gathering of friends at the house, at least 10 minutes of the conversation is dedicated to how cool these fans look and how they actually function without any visible blades. Everyone seems very amazed by the bladeless-ness of the fans, it takes a short lecture by me to explain how the fans work.

One of my complaints about the AM01 and AM02 was the amount of noise the motors made, Dyson says they’ve remedied that issue with their latest models and sent us their new AM06 12” table top fan, which is 75% quieter.

I spent the last three weeks reviewing and testing the Dyson AM06 fan. I was excited at the prospects of a quieter motor, because to me that was the biggest drawback in these otherwise great fans. However, when I first turned on the fan, the motor was indeed much quieter but it made a very loud high pitched sound, which was really annoying and I preferred the sound of the old motor over this whining sound.

But for some reason I had a feeling this was a one-off issue, I knew Dyson wouldn’t make a claim of a 75% quieter fan and then give us something that had an ear piercing whine to it. I thought there must have been a piece of dust or other debris stuck in the motor that made that sound, it just didn’t seem right.

So I decided to come up with ways to dislodge whatever was creating the noise. The first thing I did was run the fan on full blast for about an hour or so. Next… I did nothing. Running the fan at full blast seemed to have dislodged the debris and that’s when the real motor noise, or the lack of it, came through. So if you do buy a Dyson fan that’s making a high pitched noise, run it at full blast and it should remedy itself.

The Dyson AM06 is indeed much quieter than the old fan, I don’t really have a way to measure it as being 75% quieter, but I’ll take their word for it. The motor on the AM06 sounds so much smoother and makes almost no noise. Using car analogies, the AM06 sounds like an electric car while the old AM01/AM02 sound like a gasoline car in comparison. The new AM06 fan is quieter at full blast (fan speed 10) than the AM01 is at the lowest setting. That’s a huge improvement and the lack of motor sound is really refreshing.

The way Dyson has made the fan quieter is by re-engineering the airflow path with reduced turbulence and creating a Helmholtz cavity in the “engine bay” to dissipate motor noise. All this new engineering works together to create one of the quietest fans on the market.

Other improvements over our old AM01 include a remote control (which has been standard on Dyson fans for a while), a timer, and an LED display on the fan base for showing the fan speed. Some of the benefits of the bladeless technology include no choppy air, no danger of chopped hands (especially useful if you have little curious kids in the house), ease of cleaning, and of course, it looks darn cool.

The Dyson AM06 desk fan is 550 mm (21.65”) high, has an airflow of 370 L/S, and weighs 1.8 kilos (3.97 pounds). The Dyson AM06 is available online and at select retailers, at the dysoncanada.ca site, they’re priced at $349.99 each and currently there’s a limited time promotion of $100 off.

  1. About to try leaving our desk fan on the max setting for an hour to see if this removes the loud high pitched noise that appeared when we turned it on for the first time this season.
