“Frii” Concept Plastic Bicycle – I wouldn’t Take It for Free

Bike made out of recycled Plastic Frii

Alright, I’m all for that environmentally friendly mumbo jumbo talk but only to a certain extent. Sometimes these folks let their creative juices over flow and take things too far. How far you ask? Well, allow me to introduce you to the “Frii” Concept Bicycle that is made out of recycled plastic.

This is the creation of a design student, Dror Peleg, over at the Bezalel Academy of Art and Design in Jerusalem. I give him an “A” for the idea and his spirit and dedication to be part of the solution to the overflowing landfills. But he gets a “D” if not “F” on the design of the Frii Concept Bicycle. Instead of using 3D printing technology, Peleg opted out for the injection molding which is widespread in Israel. Injection molding is widely used to make outdoor furniture (tables, chairs) to things such as storage units.

The components of the Frii bicycle would be injection molded into predetermined shapes that would snap together like a puzzle resulting in a strong, happy colorful, single-speed bicycle for quick and short city rides. The design of the Frii feature small 20-inch wheels for added strength and solid tires are injected over the rims during the manufacturing process making them ‘flat tire’ proof.

  1. reading in the source youll discover that the green theme isnt the main issue here. also, 3d printing will make it cost millions to produce while injection molding will make it cost about 50 bucks! in 3d printing every piece costs the same and in injection molding the more you manufacture the cheaper it gets. it actually makes a lot of sense when you think about it…

  3. Well it would be good for city share a bike ideas.Where free bikes are placed around metro areas for people to use going from one place to another. Currently i think they just use donated bikes for it that can be in random condition. Also 3d printed might not be a durable enough material for this.

  4. Not only does it look ugly, it has no suspension and minimal padding on the seat. Riding it would be a nightmare for your backside!
