Peugeot 2008 DKR – Cross Country Rally Car

I don’t really follow any of the motorsports around but the most interesting and nail biting action always seems to be either in the rally world or motorcycle racing. In motorcycle racing, the cornering and overtaking can be quite exciting. And in the rally races, the jumps, the corners, and how close the onlookers get to the cars as they zoom by can be nerve-racking at times. I don’t have any favorites when it comes to rally but Peugeot has released a bit more information about their 2008 DKR cross-country rally car set to debut at the 2015 Dakar Rally.

The big news here is the use of a mid-mounted twin-turbo diesel engine producing 340 horsepower and sending power to two wheels. Peugeot hasn’t given details on whether it will be a rear-wheel drive or front-wheel drive rally car bu based on their detailed study, the team has decided to go with a two-wheel drive transmission offering a number of benefits.

Should they win the 2015 Dakar Rally, the decision to run a two-wheel drive vehicle will make the team the first to win the Dakar with a 2WD and a diesel engine. According to Dakar Rally regulations, two-wheel drive vehicles are allowed to be significantly lighter than 4x4s while also being allowed to use bigger wheels giving the team an advantage on some of the particularly difficult terrain they’ll run into. The larger wheels will also allow the Peugeot team to minimize the 2008 DKR’s front overhang.

Peugeot won the Dakar rally four years running back in 1987 to 1990 and now return in an attempt to recapture past glories. The 15-day event will see vehicles being tested to their limits as they encounter some of the toughest terrains the planet has to offer. According to project manager Jean-Christophe Pallier, “the 2008 DKR can practically climb vertical walls! And that’s not all! Longer suspension level – 460mm instead of 250mm – enhances its ability over dunes and when soaking up uneven ground. That’s a key asset on an event like the Dakar”.

The Peugeot 2008 DKR will be under the control of Cyril Despres, a five-time Dakar Rally Bike Race champion and Carlos Sainz who is the 2010 Dakar Rally Car Race champion.
