How I Gave My Wife the 10th Anniversary Surprise of a Lifetime

Although it hardly seemed possible, while flipping through my calendar several months ago I suddenly realized that my 10th wedding anniversary was coming up. Ten years? Really? How was it possible that we’d slipped from lovey-dovey newlyweds to being wed for an entire decade without my having noticed? Was I going to blink again and be staring down our 20th anniversary just as quickly?

For such a huge anniversary, I decided to surprise my wife with the trip of a lifetime to Hawaii. Never having been there, myself, I talked with friends and did a bit of research on where we should stay. I narrowed our choices down to the Poipu Beach area of Kauai and decided that our final destination would be the luxurious Kauai Beach Villas at Koloa Landing Resort.

Why Poipu? “Just Google it!” one of my friends told me. I did and was greeted with stunning images of crystal clear water that ranged from a bright turquoise to deep blue as it deepened farther offshore. The beach even circles inward slightly to form a perfectly pristine wading pool. Named America’s Best Beach by the Travel Channel, it’s a great spot for swimming, surfing, snorkeling, body-boarding, and simply relaxing next to its amazing waters. I was immediately sold.

Once I knew where we were heading, I had to figure out where we should stay. To celebrate this hugely important anniversary, I wanted to make it truly special and find something different than a regular hotel room. I found what I was looking for at the Koloa Landing Resort: beautiful and romantic private villas.

Let’s fast-forward through the planning process to our arrival. My wife was speechless when we opened the door to reveal our ocean-view villa. We walked out on the lanai to take in the gorgeous views and breathe in the ocean air. Leis, frosty Mai Tais, and a complimentary fruit, cheese, and cracker plate made us feel truly welcomed.

During the week we were there, it was a struggle to decide whether to relax in our beautiful villa, enjoy the resort property, or spend time at the beach. We definitely got our fill of exploring, snorkeling, and swimming at Poipu Beach. On the days we didn’t meander down to the beach, the Koloa Landing Lagoon Pool awaited us. Surrounded by palm trees and lush flowers and foliage, it was a tropical escape in and of itself.

The pool provided easy access to the resort spa. No 10th anniversary is complete without a couples’ aromatherapy massage. Afterwards, my wife got a facial while I popped over to the Koloa Landing Gourmet Market to surprise her with some light snacks and treats for us to enjoy on the lanai.

During our time at Koloa Resort, we made memories that will last a lifetime. It was such an enjoyable vacation that we’re debating whether we need to wait for our 20th anniversary to return. Maybe we could have a blowout 15th anniversary, as well? Or even 11th, maybe?
