Turbocharged Mazda CX-9

Mazda’s large CUV, the CX-9, is all-new and is now offered with a turbocharged engine only, instead of the 3.7 liter naturally aspirated V6 engine offered on the previous generation CX-9. Mazda presented the all-new 2017 CX-9 at the Los Angeles Auto Show, featuring a fresher design that has a strong resemblance to the smaller CX-5 crossover.

The new look of the Mazda CX-9 is a departure from the old and looks quite nice, it looks much sportier thanks to its shorter overall size and longer wheelbase. The CX-9 loses 1.2″ in overall length but gains 2.2″ in wheelbase; the shorter front and rear overhangs really enhance the sporty stance. The CX-9 has also been put on a diet, weighing 190 and 287 pounds less than the FWD and AWD models respectively, compared to the previous generation CX-9. Mazda is going in the right direction with their lighter cars, it seems every other car maker is making their cars heavier and heavier.

The interior also gets a makeover, it looks pretty high-end based on the press release pictures, especially with the brown leather, and wood and aluminum trim.

The 2017 Mazda CX-9 is now only offered with a 2.5 liter turbocharged SKYACTIV 4-cylinder engine, producing 250 horsepower at 5,000 rpm and 310 pound-feet of torque at 2,000 rpm, when it’s fed 93 octane gasoline. On regular 87 grade gasoline, that horsepower figure drops to 227. Power is sent to either the front wheels or all-four wheels via a 6-speed automatic transmission.
