Ten Things You Want Your Date to Notice About You

It’s a big night, and you want to get it right. The hard part is over. You asked her out, and she said yes. You’ve booked the perfect restaurant, and you’ve arranged everything for the evening to impress her. Now all you need to worry about is dressing for the part. After all, you want to make sure she notices the best bits about you. Here’s what you should be focusing on because she will be too:

1. Hair

Girls love hair, and they’re going to notice yours before most other things. But it’s not just the hair on your head they’re going to be staring at. Stubble and beards can be attractive or off-putting for a girl. Stubble is a huge problem when it comes to that kiss at the end of the night. If you like the look, at least make sure it’s soft enough not to cause her a rash! As for the beard? Yes, condition it. Yes, comb it. And yes, you should definitely make sure it’s as tidy as the hair on your head.

2. Eyes

Tired, bloodshot eyes are not a good look. For a girl that’s already a bit nervous about being alone with a guy they just met, it can ring alarm bells. There are plenty of reasons why your eyes might be red or uncomfortable. Make sure drink and drugs aren’t one of them. Cool water or eye drops can help. Getting enough sleep and a healthy diet will stop them looking baggy and saggy.

3. The Watch

If you’ve met at the restaurant, then you might not have had a chance to show off your car. The next best thing to a ‘status symbol’ for you is the watch. A mens watch can be functional and efficient. It can also be a luxury item that gives away your passion for money and fine things. Perhaps you always wear your sports watch, suggesting you’re keen to stay fit and healthy? Your watch says a lot about you so wear the one that does your personality justice.

If you’ve got a classic style watch, then you might have inherited it. Chances are there is a story to go with that so it can become a conversation piece. If your watch is boring, then she might think that reflects who you are. You need to wear a timepiece that compliments your outfit, and gives her a few hints about the kind of man you are.

4. The Suit

If you don’t usually wear a suit for work, then date night might be one of the few times you actually get it out of the closet. Of course, you might have purchased one just this afternoon especially for this date. There are many different styles of suit so don’t just grab the first one off the peg and think it will be OK. Take your time to work out what your true style is. What does your suit say about you?

The classic suit looks good without looking like you just walked out of your office. A wool blend can add a touch of luxury and quality without breaking the bank. You don’t have to get it tailored, but it will look so much better if you do. Off the peg rarely looks as good as something made to measure.

5. The Scent

Your cologne or aftershave should have a distinct aroma. If she can’t smell it, then there is no point wearing it, so be brave enough to actually ‘wear’ it. If you’re really nervous about it, then choose a spray or spritzer style bottle and let it fill the air to fall on your clothes. Of course, if you’re going to be removing any layers in her company later on, then you’ve got no scent actually on you. Sweat, stale smoke and booze are very pungent and incredibly off-putting. Make sure you’re fresh and use an antiperspirant.

6. The Shoes

If you’re wearing brand new shoes, make sure you’ve worn them in thoroughly. She will notice if you’re fiddling or adjusting your footwear all night. And if you’re walking and wincing, you can’t possibly be paying her enough attention. Wear the right socks to suit the shoe and protect your feet from any tightness. Don’t be afraid to have a new heel or sole applied even if they are new shoes. Slipping over is an embarrassment you can do without. As always, buff your footwear to make sure they look like you’ve made an effort for her.

7. The Gentleman

So you look the part, but are you acting the part? The perfect gentleman is one that acts like a gentleman. That means minding your Ps and Qs and offering her all the common courtesies a nice girl would expect. It’s not old-fashioned to help her with her chair. It’s good manners and helpful. And pouring her some more water shows you care about her comfort.

8. The Listener

A successful date is defined by how much you remember about her. If you really like her, you’ll find it easy to listen to the things she says. You should still make an effort to show her you’re listening though. Look her in the eye, smile, nod along. Ask questions, so she elaborates on the details of her story. Directing her conversation in this way shows you’re engaged, paying attention and that you’re interested. It helps make it easier for her to talk to you as well.

9. Your Attitude

Be kind to the waiting staff. Thank the person that fetches your coat. And don’t get huffy about how long the wait was. Show that you’re happy with your date’s company no matter what is going on around you.

10. Your Appeal

If you want a second date, you have to have appeal. That is largely down to your personality, but looking good can certainly help. Remember, if you’re honest and just yourself, you don’t need to work hard to hide anything or pretend to be someone else. And if she doesn’t like you, then move on to the next date!
