Presidio Modelo – Cuba’s Abandoned Panopticon Prison

If you were living in Cuba during the 1920s, then I suspect Presidio Modelo was the last place you wanted to end up.

It was a panopticon prison in the truest sense of the word, and though it’s thankfully no longer being used as a prison, you can still visit. According to Wikipedia, “the prison now serves as a museum and is declared a national monument, and the old administration building now serves as a school and research center”, which means that if you’re a US Citizen, you can go visit this prison for fun, and then be arrested for real when you get back stateside!

Two Men Enter…

For those of you that have played Battlefield 4, this looks a bit like Lockdown, right? I don’t think I’m imagining that one.

And for those of you that really don’t give a shit, well… here are the pictures I was able to find via this thread on Reddit. If you have any pictures of your own, let me know in the comments down below.

Looks a bit like a lighthouse… a lighthouse of complete misery, but a lighthouse all the same.

Is that… is that Jesus being crucified up on the guard tower there? I’m not imagining that, right? Click on the big version and I think you’ll see what I mean. Man, that’s bloody grim, even for an evil looking prison like Presidio Modelo.

Seeing the water accumulating at the bottom made me think, what if they put a skating rink at the bottom? They’ve got all that space anyway, and it would be a good way to keep all the inmates healthy and happy. No doubt their main concern at the time.

Right, so that’s Presidio Modelo.

If you’re able to visit Cuba without being arrested, then this may be worth checking out. If you do, be sure to take lots of pictures and share them with us. I’ll be sure to update the post.
