Can you imagine VR Parkour? I sure can. More importantly, I have a feeling we’re going to see it in the next year or so. Here’s why…
Have you seen the latest Mirror’s Edge: Catalyst trailer from Gamescom 2015? If not, I’ve embedded it below for your viewing pleasure. If you’ve heard of the original Mirror’s Edge, then suffice it to say that this is essentially a reboot with a great new story and graphics engine. It’s Mirrors Edge for the world of today, and based on the trailer, it looks pretty sexy. I also think it looks perfect for some VR Parkour action, but more on that in a minute.
Most people I’ve spoken with about VR Parkour feel that it would be an instant vomit. The jumping, rolling, and fast movements could be extremely disorienting for someone not accustomed to a VR experience. I don’t disagree with that at all. However, I also believe that people are going to try it anyway, because seriously… Parkour in VR!
So here’s what I predict: while Dice won’t officially add VR support to Mirror’s Edge: Catalyst, they may include some hidden functionality to make it possible, similar to what we saw with Alien: Isolation last year. The community will then tinker to get it working, and those with a strong stomach can give it a try.
What are your thoughts? Do you think we’re going to see these “extreme” experiences carry over into the virtual world?
