Are you a Lamborghini fan, but think the Aventador and the Huracan are a bit too hard core for you to drive around town? Well, Lamborghini has a solution for you, in the form of the Lamborghini Asterion LPI 910-4. The Asterion is softer and more of a GT car, like the Ferrari F12 Berlinetta, and it’s also a plug-in hybrid.
But don’t worry, it’s not the Prius-type of hybrid, it’s more like the Porsche 918 Spyder, packing over 900 horses and reaching 62 mph (100 km/h) in 3 seconds flat, and hitting a top speed of 199 mph. This definitely ain’t your mamma’s hybrid.
Like all Lamborghini cars, the Asterion is named after a bull, but the Asterion is/was a different kind of bull. It was half-bull, half-man; you might know it as Minotaur. Like the Minotaur, the Asterion supercar is a two-in-one; half-electric, half-gasoline powered.
The gasoline engine is a 5.2 liter V10 producing 602 horsepower and 413 pound-feet of torque, sending power to the rear wheels via a 7-speed dual-clutch automated gearbox. Each of the front wheels houses an electric motor, with a third electric motor located inside the transmission. The total combined output is 910 Italian stallions.
The Lamborghini Asterion plug-in hybrid concept can go up to 31 miles on electric power only, at speeds of up to 78 miles per hour. In the electric-only mode, the car is front wheel drive.
Styling wise, the Asterion isn’t as angular as the other two offerings from the Italian automaker; the styling has been kept on the softer side because of the Grand Touring nature of the car. The look might not appeal to everyone and I’m not sure what to think of it based on the pictures. It looks like a mix between the Aventador and a Ferrari 456, to me. I think it probably is a good looking car in the flesh.
Currently the Lamborghini Asterion LPI 910-4 is a concept car and there is no word on whether it will be built as a production model. The design of the car makes me think its production ready and it probably will be announced as a production model in the next year or two.
