Porsche 918 Spyder Martini

The iconic Martini Racing livery on a Porsche sports car is back with the Porsche 918 Spyder Martini.  In 1971 a Martini sponsored Porsche 917 race car won the 24 Hours of Le Mans race, Martini later became the official sponsor/partner of the Porsche factory race team, the partnership lasted from 1973 to 1978.

The Porsche 918 Spyder has a special place in our hearts because the first article ever written by the Unfinished Man team was about this car (here).  Back then the car was in the concept phase but now we know it will be produced and will go on sale in September 2013 with a hefty starting price of €645,000 (or about $800,000 US) before local taxes and other BS fees and levies.

The 918 Spyder is a hybrid supercar that’s powered by a mid-mounted V8 engine producing 500 horsepower and two electric motors at each axle that produce another 218 HP.  The hybrid supercar is able to do the 0 – 60 mph sprint in 3.1 seconds with a top speed of 199 mph, not bad for a “green” car.  Some interesting facts about the car include the ability to drive the car in electric only mode for up to 94 mph, the car can be driven on battery only mode for 16 miles, and it can get 78 mpg on the European cycle (although this number will drop considerably as the car is driven like a real Porsche should be).
