Kormaran – A New Class Of Watercraft

We’ve written about a number of boats from mega yachts to unique water craft over the years. I recently wrote about the Quadrofoil Q2S which resembles a sports car for the water but I think I may have come across something even more awesome. If the Quadrofoil is a sports car then the Kormaran is an exotic sports car in a league of its own.

What makes the Kormaran so unique is that it can transform itself and do so while in motion. The Kormaran has the agility of a mono-hull for quick maneuvering but has the stability of a catamaran or trimaran. It may not have the comfort features of a large boat or yacht but the highest quality materials are used in the construction of this craft including carbon-fiber for the body, fine wood, and leather seats. The Kormaran does however give you the opportunity to sunbathe as one its features of this watercraft is to transform into a large bathing platform, a rare feature on craft of this style.

The newly designed hydrofoils also allow the Kormaran to travel in shallow waters as well as being able to land on shore. Thanks to the hydrofoils, the water resistance can be reduced by as much as 80 percent, which results in higher speed while consuming less energy. The ride is also more comfortable thanks to the decoupling of the waves.

The Kormaran measures in at 23 ft and is powered by a 493 horsepower triple jet drive capable of reaching speeds as high as 44 mph and has a range of 108 nautical miles.

The use of hydrofoils is becoming more popular and the ones seen here are designed to be retractable making for advanced usability. The Austrian company was founded in 2010 and this project is officially approved by the government. The technologies featured on this watercraft are patented and total investment for the project exceeds 10 million Euros.

  1. This is definitely a unique boat – I like some of the cool technology they are developing with this boat. I like that it has technology to make the ride smoother by decoupling of the waves.
