This year, even more so than in year’s past, women are inspiring others through their work, advocacy, and influence. In the context of the pandemic, many women have taken on more daily roles than before – math tutor, at-home chef, children’s playmate, protector from unseen enemies. Women do a lot to not only lift up their households and closer communities, but also work tirelessly to hold up society at large. This is seen today as women are at the frontline of the battle against COVID-19, making up almost 70% of the healthcare workforce.

No matter the reason, if there is a woman in your life that you would like to honor there is no better time than during International Women’s Month. International Women’s Day (IWD) is March 8th and dates back to 1911. The United Nations officially recognized IWD in 1977  as a global day to celebrate the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women. Now it is being socially projected as the whole month of March – known as International Women’s Month (IWM).

With all of this in mind, the question is – what can men do to make the women in their life feel valued, seen, and respected? As always, flowers are a great start. We have compiled a list of the best flowers to give your leading lady this IWM, and why.

Roses

With their special meaning dating back to Shakespearean times, roses are a timeless classic and great to gift this IWM. As Shakespeare himself said in Romeo and Juliet, “What’s in a name? That which we call a rose. By any other name would smell as sweet.”

And the best thing is they’re not only reserved for your other half; each color can say something different. Here is a short list of a few that may be applicable for the woman in your life this IWM:

Red Roses

This traditional color of rose stands for passion, true love, romance, and desire. The red rose is a classic way to say “I Love You.” If you want to make a romantic gesture or possibly show your desire towards someone in your life, this is the color to choose.

Peach Roses

Peach roses are known for showing thanks and expressing gratitude. As discussed earlier, there is a lot to be grateful for towards women in 2021. If you have a lady you want to show appreciation towards – whether it’s a family member or close colleague – peach is the shade you’re looking for.

Yellow Roses

A yellow rose represents both friendship and care. If you have a partner in crime that you want to show affection towards, then a yellow rose is as good as gold.

Mimosa Flowers

The mimosa flower is the official flower of International Women’s Day, making it a perfect option throughout the month. The tradition of the mimosa flower started in Italy during the Festa Della Donna in 1946 and the objective of this festival was to fight for the equality of women. The mimosa flower is the symbol of this celebration, and IWM, because it represents strength, sensibility, and sensitivity.

If you have a female influence in your life that you want to show reciprocity and adoration to, this traditional flower is the way to go.

Gerberas

Also known as gerbera daisies, these flowers symbolize purity, innocence, and beauty. Gerberas are guaranteed to brighten up any room, and any day for that matter. If your significant other has a way of brightening up your life, then a gerbera is the most obvious choice to show her you care.

Hydrangeas

A hydrangea has a very diverse range of meanings. It has a history of portraying genuine emotions – symbolizing heartfelt feelings of appreciation and thankfulness. If there is a woman in your life that you want to show genuine gratitude towards for one reason or another, then this is your flower.

Peonies

This flower is often referred to as the queen of flowers. Peonies, which are native to China, come in a range of colors, including red, white, pink, and more. They symbolize romance, good luck, compassion, and prosperity. If you have a queen of your heart, then a peony is an excellent choice.

Lilies

Lilies are a symbol of motherhood, passion, and beauty. The shape and variety of colors are what make a lily the perfect choice for your lady no matter what you’re trying to say. Additionally, lilies tend to have a shelf life of about 3-4 weeks, so they can last the entirety of International Women’s month.

Carnations

Carnations are known as the “divine flower” – based out of its Greek name dianthus. According to a Christian legend, carnations grew from the Virgin Mary’s tears as she watched Jesus carry the cross, which is how they became associated with motherly love. Whether this is for a mother or not, this flower also offers a plethora of color options and so is extremely customizable for the woman in your life. Here is a short list of different meanings for the different colors of carnations:

  • White carnations symbolize purity and luck.
  • Light red carnations symbolize admiration.
  • Dark red carnations symbolize love and affection.
  • Pink carnations symbolize gratitude.
