Have you ever thought about your fashion decisions in the past and been horrified of what those memories bring? Maybe you had a pair of flares, gone triple denim one time (the Canadian tuxedo) or have tried Crocs and socks. A fashion faux-pas sits in a small corner, a temporary lapse of sanity, we have all been guilty of committing one. Especially at a younger age when you are experimenting who you are, some of those experiments end up in total disaster. And as you are navigating those fashion landmines, you tend to gravitate towards proven stalwarts in your wardrobe that seem to stand the test of time, such as pretty much anything you’ll find at The Gap.

Here is an overview of those trusted pieces of wear.

A plain white button-down shirt seems to be an eternal classic. There is very little that won’t go with this classic. Worn with a suit, under a jumper or just as-is with a pair of chinos, trousers or jeans, you can’t go wrong. It is advisable to invest in one that is made from thick, soft cotton.

And when we say white shirt, we should always follow with a pale blue shirt. You can’t really show up to work with a white shirt all the time so a pale blue one will mix things up just enough for people to not label you as the ‘white shirt guy.’

When you really need to dress up and look the part, make sure you have a good fitting suit to go with your shirts. You can get something tailored but getting one of the racks and having it modified to fit you perfectly does the trick as well. A good black and grey suit usually suffices. It’s quite common that the industry you work in sets certain expectations concerning single or double-breasted, pinstripes or not and any accessories. Follow those unwritten rules to blend in or be a rebel and break with those expectations.

And when you need to dress down, make sure to have a good navy blue or grey crew neck jumper. It’s easy to wear and casual enough to feel comfortable in, but it still looks professional enough to get away with it at work.

Your wardrobe is not always about work. You might want to bring in some more personality on social events and just normal going out. Get something that represents you as a person. Check out bamboo cay shirts for some inspiration and adventure.

And if you are feeling a bit adventurous, why not get some simple sneakers for those days you don’t want to wear your loafers or Oxfords? You may or may not be able to get away with this at work, especially when there is no ‘casual Friday,’ but your feet will thank you not being trapped in stiff work shoes all the time.

And with those sneakers come an excellent pair of jeans. Don’t skimp on quality, as a good pair of jeans can last you years on years, granted you don’t grow out of them. A good pair of jeans and a high-quality white t-shirt can become your favorite thing to wear on weekends. With some good sunglasses, you will sure channel your inner James Dean.

Also, don’t forget to bring your sports jacket or blazer. If you are out and about channeling your rebel without a cause, you might need to dress up quickly. Having a blazer around to change into quickly will give you that option.
