Don’t Let Geo-Blocks Ruin Your Holiday

Travelling across the world is truly an exhilarating adventure.  Visiting places you’ve never been, experiencing cultures you’ve never participated in, and trying the food of various countries makes for a good time.

Actually, it’s such a good time that we may forget about certain duties, one of them being staying safe.  It’s easy to get caught up in the rush of excitement when seeing the Great Wall of China, but let’s fall off it, right?

A bigger issue that physical safety is that of online safety.  Many don’t bother to read about different countries’ rules and regulations when it comes to the Internet, and this ignorance can be devastating.  So what can you do to keep yourself secure?

If you plan on visiting China, it would be smart to read about regulations that they have over there, such as no Netflix.  Same thing goes for India, South Korea, the U.K, etc.  Every country has different rules and regulations for it’s Internet usage.  These regulations may go as far as to banning controversial episodes.

If you ignore these regulations, you can even get yourself in trouble.  Because of this, it’s important to learn all you need to know about where you’re visiting.

And just a little tip:  Using a VPN for Netflix will let you get around bans by overcoming geo-restrictions.  Again, do this at your own risk, but who’s really going to care if you’re watching Friends at 3 in the morning?

Also, just being wary of where you are can keep yourself safe from 99% of cyber-attacks.

For example, if you’re not careful, you may find yourself connected to a fake wi-fi hotspot.  With these fake hotspots, the criminals that set it up can access any data you send through.  Checking your bank info on the network?  Guess what they just received access to?

This is a problem across the world, but it’s especially bad around countries like South Africa.

I mean, the only advice I can truly give is to just educate yourself on where you’re going, the dangers of the area, and how to protect yourself.  Every country is unique in how it presents itself, and they all have unique problems.  You may find fake hotspots in one country, and the next country has blocked your favorite artist from Spotify!

Keeping yourself secure and safe while travelling takes nothing more than some time to educate yourself on the area and securing your devices.  Once you do that, you’re good to go and finally enjoy your vacation!
