2013 Opel Adam Ready To Take On Fiat 500

Although not identical to the Fiat 500, you don’t have to be a genius to connect the dots and see how similar the Opel Adam is to the 500, especially from the rear view. The Fiat has seen success in the European market and GM’s European brand is eager to get in on the action.

The Opel Adam is certainly more aggressive looking and features a pinch of retro style designing. The Fiat 500 is a bit bland looking in my opinion. To set itself apart from the competition, the Opel is allowing customers to ability to customize the Adam to their liking on the inside of the vehicle as well as the exterior. The Opel Adam is also the first model in the A-segment that will have the option of LED daytime running lights.

The Adam will be available in three ecoFLEX four-cylinder engines which include a 1.2-liter delivering 69hp. The other two engines are 1.4-liter each producing 86hp and 99hp. All three motors are linked to a five-speed manual gearbox.

The vehicle has many highlights and one interesting feature is the “floating roof”, which is a visually disconnected room from the body of the car and can be ordered in two different colors that provide a contrast against the rest of the car. The Adam also features a seven-inch touchscreen designed to support the latest media sources including Bluetooth technology as well as providing connectivity for Android and Apple iOS software.

The car also features an LED-lit starlight roof trim on the inside which looks very tacky to me but I’m sure the girls will love it. The Advanced Park Assist II system is a handy feature for those who can’t parallel park worth crap. But then again, this car is tiny and doesn’t require such fancy things.

The Opel Adam is a tiny bit bigger than the Fiat 500 but not as large as the Mini. The Adam has a wheelbase of 91 inches while the Fiat is 90.5 inches and the Mini is 97 inches. The Adam has MacPherson struts in the front and a compound crank system at the back wheels. Opel is also offering a lowered, sports chassis. The vehicle will be available in three trim grades: JAM (fashionable/colorful), GLAM (elegant/sophisticated), and SLAM (racy/sporty).

The Opel Adam is scheduled to go on sale in Europe later this year or the early part of 2013.
