Mercedes-Benz Unimog 406 Doppelkabine

When it comes to off-road vehicles, some of the greatest performance civilian vehicles were originally made for the military or were farm vehicles; vehicles like the Defender, G-Wagon, Wrangler, and Hummer to name a few. We’ve written quite a few articles on the above mentioned off-roaders but one vehicle we’ve never written about is the Mercedes-Benz Unimog.

The Mercedes-Benz Unimog was designed as an agricultural vehicle in the wake of World War II, it’s still in production with even more equipment and is much larger. The Unimog was first produced in 1951 and came with a variety of attachments like snow blowers, brush mowers, and other farming equipment, making it an ideal vehicle for a variety of tasks. Currently, new Unimogs are being used by militaries, fire departments, and aid agencies around the world and people like Arnold Schwarzenegger drive civilian versions on the streets of Hollywood.

The vehicle pictured here is the 1976 Mercedes-Benz Unimog 406 Doppelkabine, currently on auction at Bonhams and is expected to fetch anywhere between $50,000 and $70,000. It was used in the Bundeswehr (German military) as an aircraft tug, it has been restored and is painted in military green and black. The interior is reupholstered with seating for five and is very basic, as one would expect from a 1970’s military truck.

The 406 series Unimog is powered by a V6 that produces a lot less power than the vehicle’s tough exterior would suggest, a mere 84 bhp. It comes standard with 4×4. Via: Bonhams
