I don’t want to sound like an old man by saying “they don’t make ‘em like they used to” but man, they don’t make ‘em like they used to!! Here’s a perfect example, a beautiful 1936 Mercedes-Benz 540 K von Krieger Special Roadster.
The car belonged to an aristocratic Prussian family, today’s equivalent of the “1 %”, that purchased it brand new in 1936. The supercharged roadster was shipped out of Germany during World War II to Switzerland, to protect it from being destroyed while the country got bombed. After the war, the car was shipped to New York City with the family and after the von Kreigers moved back to Germany, the car was left in a garage for the next four decades until it was sold to its current owner.
The owner ordered a complete restoration of the 540 K Special Roadster to factory specs done by Chris Charlton. The car is finished in black paint with lots of shinny chrome, the interior features luxurious Cognac leather with chrome trim on the door panels, dashboard, and around the gauges. The 1936 Mercedes-Benz 540 K von Krieger Special Roadster will be put up for auction at Gooding & Company’s 2012 Pebble Beach Auctions, which takes place on August 18th and 19th. There are no estimates on how much the car might sell for, but it’s expected to sell for many millions because of the car’s history.
