Watch Dogs PC – NVIDIA Technologies Explored

Have you ever noticed how games seem to become uglier as they get closer to release?

Strictly speaking, this isn’t actually true. What’s really happening is that the marketing departments of game studios think it’s brilliant to only show the high resolution PC version of the game for most of the marketing material. This makes sense given that games are generally developed first on PC, but it means that console gamers are upset time and time again as they realize they’ve been duped.

Unfortunately… Watch Dogs is no exception, and people are kind of pissed off. If I weren’t going to play the PC version of Watch Dogs, I would probably be pissed too. And speaking of Watch Dogs PC…

Ubisoft and NVIDIA have decided to grace us PC gamers with a good and proper Watch Dogs PC trailer showing off all the fancy new NVIDIA technology available in the PC version of the game. Check this out:

The speaker talks a lot about cinema quality rendering, and I think that’s warranted, at least in the PC version of Watch Dogs. Though Ubisoft is in no danger of making a visually realistic looking game, the graphics do look very crisp and life-like. I can’t say much on HBAO+ – Horizon Based Ambient Occlusion – from a technical perspective, but as a gamer the effect is rather striking.

The temporal anti-aliasing solution they’re using, TXAA, looks pretty fantastic as well. However, I’ll be interested to see what the performance hit is like… hopefully less than the classic MSAA.

Watch Dogs PC Release Date…

I’m going to speak for PC gamers everywhere when I say that we’re a touchy lot when it comes to release dates. Developers often lie and promise a simulataneous release, and then – only at the last minute – delay the PC version by months. I’ve seen this happen time and time again, but… it looks like Watch Dogs is actually going to ship on time for us PC gamers.

I’m excited.
