Droptop Fun: Ferrari 488 Spider

Hubba hubba Ferrari!!!

If you’re a fan of the Ferrari 488 GTB, then you’re going to absolutely love the 488 Spider. I think the drop top 488 looks even better than the coupe, and in that blue… oh my my!! This car is absolutely hot hot hot!!!

Based on the 488 GTB, the 488 Spider enhances the good looks of the coupe into a hard top convertible that looks like an incredibly fun summer toy. The Spider is also powered by the same engine as the coupe is, which is a 3.9 liter turbocharged V8, producing 661 horsepower and 560 pound-feet of torque. Power is sent to the rear wheels via a 7-speed dual-clutch gearbox.

Convertible cars are known to be heaver and less stiff than their coupe siblings, but the 488 Spider is only 50 kilograms heavier than the 488 GTB and has the same chassis stiffness as the coupe. The 488 Spider’s torsional rigidity is 23% better than the 458 Italia Spider’s. The folding hard top takes 14 seconds to fully open or close.

According to Ferrari, the 488 Spider is 0.2 seconds slower to 62 mph than the coupe, getting to 62 mph in 3.2 seconds, with a top speed of 203 mph.

The 2016 Ferrari 488 Spider will be officially unveiled in September, at the 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show. No word on prices yet.
