How to Save Big on Origin PC Games

As any gaming enthusiast can attest too, playing video games is an expensive hobby. Games are regularly $59.99, $70, even $100 for things like season passes and special editions. It’s a lot of money to spend on entertainment.

But did you know that certain regions of the world actually pay less for their games? Just as you can get a can of Coca-Cola for less in Sub-Saharan Africa than you can in New York, the same goes for games.

Let’s use Mexico for example…

In the photo above, you may have noticed that Dragon Age: Inquisition – a brand new game at the time of this publication – is only $39.99 on Origin as opposed to the usual $59.99 price you’ll find most everywhere else. Why is that? Simple: it’s from the Mexican version of the Origin website.

But you don’t live in Mexico, so how does that help you? Well, turns out that you don’t actually need to live in Mexico to get that price, you just need a proxy or VPN to change your IP Address to one in Mexico.

I’ve written about proxies and VPNs in-depth a few years ago, but that information is still as relevant today as it was then. I suggest you start there before coming back to this article, as you’ll need basic knowledge of how to set one up. Hint: it’s not very complicated.

After you have a proxy or VPN ready to go (these guys are my favorite,) you’ll also need to have a PayPal account handy. I just assume that most people have one, but if you don’t, you can find out more here.

I’m Ready…

So you’ve got your proxy or VPN, your PayPal account, and you’re ready to go. What’s next? Here’s what you need to do.

  • Register for an Origin account if you haven’t already
  • Sign out of Origin
  • Load up your Mexican proxy or VPN
  • Sign back into Origin in your browser, i.e.: the web version of the Origin site
  • Buy the game using PayPal as the payment method

Now, it goes without saying that the website will be in Spanish. I didn’t need to use any translation software (it’s pretty straight forward,) but you can always translate the pages as you go along.

So, there you have it. You now know this knowledge, and can choose what you want to do with it accordingly. Feel free to debate the moral implications in the comments below, as I know that’s coming.
