Oh Brother! Nissan Uses UV Energy For Glow In The Dark Car

Oh brother indeed, I just had a terrible vision where the car tuning scene was being overtaken by cars that glow in the dark! Nissan has become the first auto-maker to make use of a glow-in-the-dark coating which is able to absorb UV energy during the daytime and it glows after sundown for approximately eight to ten hours. The vehicle of choice for this new gimmick is of course the eco-friendly and all-electric Nissan LEAF.

According to Nissan, the formula consists of rare natural earth product called Strontium Aluminate which is a solid, odorless, and chemically and biologically neutral. The formula is called STARPATH and is the creation of Hamish Scott. Once the product is applied to a vehicle, the product is said to last up to 25 years!

There are a number luminous car wraps that are available on the market but this is the first time that an official auto-maker has applied such treatment to one of its vehicles.

With this, you’ll never have to worry about “losing your car” in the parking lot unless everyone else also jumps on the bandwagon. Would you drive a glow-in-the-dark car? Maybe applying this to certain parts of the vehicle for accents would be okay but the entire vehicle seems like a bit of an overkill. Nissan has no plans on applying this to its fleet of vehicles for the time being and this is just a one-off project.

This would also be bad news for stalkers and those who like to involve themselves in late night car chases with the police. I think a better application of this would be for motorcycles. One of the leading causes of motorcycle accidents is not being seen by other motorists. What do you guys think?
