The Catwoman Collection – Adam Hughes

If you had asked me a few years ago what I thought of comic book art, I would have said “silly and unrealistic”. I can’t say why exactly, but it really didn’t resonate with me at the time. Then, I started to get more exposure to the medium, and began to find fantastic artists like Ben Oliver, and the incredible comic book artist responsible for the Catwoman covers below, Adam Hughes.

I stumbled onto Adam’s work a few days ago after one of the commenter on our Fairy Tale Fantasies chimed in saying that his work is incredible, and that the woman look a lot more realistic than they’re portrayed by most comic book artists. I happen to agree, and I think it’s that quality (among other things) that really sets Adam’s work apart.

Adam Hughes Catwoman

I hope I’m not insulting anyone by saying this, but this particular cover reminds me a lot of Halle Berry. Perhaps it’s just the angle of her face, but I don’t think I’m too far off the mark.

This is by far my favorite of the 8 covers I’ve included here. Absolutely everything about this looks incredibly, from the hair, to the shadowing around Selina’s neck, and behind her head. Absolutely fantastic all around.

Catwoman does not look happy here, almost as if she’s riding a motorcycle during rush hour, with skull faced goons blocking her way.

Kicked in the nuts, and scratched in the face… this fellow seems to have gotten a lot more than he bargained for.

What an incredibly… large… hat and jacket Zatana has. Never have I seen a pair quite like this. I know, not exactly Catwoman, but hey… Selina is there in the background!

The lighting looks fantastic on this, and the entire scene reminds me of something straight out of Japan, the 80s, or both. I wonder what the “SEX” building in the background sells exactly?

I think you’ll only enjoy this comparison if you’ve been rock climbing, but this reminds me of a “chimney”, and I always found them somewhat terrifying. I would not want to climb around like this in the snow with bats flying around. No thank you.

The low cut is to keep her cool, okay? One works up quite a sweat when stealing priceless items from rich people’s homes. It’s tough work!

More Adam Hughes

The eight covers I’ve featured are just a small sampling of Adam’s entire collection, which spans far more than just the Catwoman franchise. No, instead I highly recommend you head over to his official website and look around. He’s done everything from Superman to Tomb Raider, and he even sells some of the posters directly through his website. At $10 and $20 a pop, they’re well worth the money.

You can also order a collection of his work called Adam Hughes Cover to Cover for around $25 USD on Amazon. It features a wide range of his work, as well as commentary from Adam himself that (apparently) is rather rare.
