When it comes to ranking how dangerous the cities throughout the country there is a certain criterion that is used in order to come up with the most accurate list.

There are numerous organizations that publish annual lists of the most dangerous cities in the US. For the most part, the information that is used to put together the lists come from the crime statistics gathered by the FBI. Since not all cities are exactly the same size population wise, they will use a ratio that compares the number of violent crimes per 100,000 persons in the specific city. For this article, the FBI statistics that were used came from 2017.

#1 St. Louis, Missouri – The city of St. Louis in Missouri is considered the most dangerous city in the US and this is based on the number of reported violent crimes, 2,082 per 100,000 puts it in the #1 position.

#2 Detroit, Michigan – Detroit, Michigan is the second most dangerous city in the US with 2,057 violent crimes reported per 100,000 persons.

#3 Baltimore, Maryland – Baltimore, Maryland is third on the list of most dangerous cities according to the violent crime statistic from the FBI. There were 2027 violent crimes reported per 100,000 persons.

#4 Memphis, Tennessee – Memphis, Tennessee is fourth on the list of the most dangerous cities in the US according to the crime statistics gathered by the FBI for all crimes reported in the city. There were 2,003 violent crimes reported per 100,000 persons.

#5 Kansas City, Missouri – Kansas City, Missouri is the 5th most dangerous city in the US based on the violent crime statistics gathered by the FBI. There were 1724 violent crimes reported per 100,000 persons.
