Do you ever find yourself sitting at home on a Friday night with no plans, no idea how you want to spend your evening, and a phone full of friends who are already busy? If you’re anything like me, you probably love the idea of “winging it” and having fun without all that annoying planning stuff. There’s definitely something to be said for spontaneity, but in my experience, more often than not I’ll find myself scrambling at 5:00 PM Friday evening to figure out what the hell I’m doing, and that’s hardly the way to start a weekend. The good news is that there’s a simple solution which won’t take you much time, and that will spare you from an evening alone when you would rather be out.
Instead of waiting until Friday evening to figure out things to do on the weekend, set your phone to remind you Tuesday morning that you need to plan your weekend. I use a task manager called Astrid on my Android phone to handle this, but any sort of calendar or task program should work fine. Tuesday is ideal because you’ll probably be recovered from the previous two days of insanity, but you’ll still have plenty of time to start thinking about what you want to do come Friday. You can also start asking your friends if they have any plans or ideas, and then coördinate the where and when.
I dislike planning immensely, but I’ve come to recognize the benefits, especially to my social life. If you’re willing to put in a bit of time early in the week, I promise your weekends will go a lot more smoothly. You won’t be worrying about what to do come Friday, and you can use all your extra time towards actually doing fun stuff, instead of just trying to think of fun stuff to do.
