The PETEBOX MGMT Cover – One Beatboxer, One Guitar, One Take

I’m always amazed at the ingenuity of creative people, and what they can produce with limited materials. I found this video for Kids- The PETEBOX MGMT cover, which is an awesome continuous shot of Pete as he uses only his voice, a guitar, and a loop pedal to create what I think is a song that’s almost better than the original. I’ve always been fascinated with the use of looping and technology for the creation of complex music with very few tangible instruments or components, and out of all the artists I’ve found doing this, The PETEBOX is by far my favorite.

The PETEBOX MGMT Cover – From Beatboxer to Entire Band With a Bit of Technology

I first heard PETEBOX doing his freestyle beat boxing, and was idly browsing through his videos when I stumbled on this gem. While you’re watching, consider that this entire song was produced in one take, using only his voice, the guitar and the loop pedal. The keyboards, drums, bass line, and doubled vocals are all him manipulating his voice; that being impressive enough, you have to also remember that once he has recorded the loops onto the box, he has to remember to turn them on and off at the right times with the pedal as he’s singing and playing. The PETEBOX MGMT cover really resonates with me simply because it has it’s own style. For whatever reason, because he’s a beat boxer by trade, as you hear the opening to the song you aren’t prepared for how excellent his singing voice is. Interestingly enough, I think he out-MGMTs MGMT…’Kids’ was an alright song in my eyes before, but I’m not ashamed to say I immediately headed to iTunes and grabbed this version. It’s been on heavy rotation ever since. Watch The PETEBOX MGMT cover below:

If you’re not a big fan of MGMT’s ‘Kids’ or you’re wondering if PETEBOX has musical chops on his own, then try the video below. It’s an original composition from his upcoming album, and for me brings to mind a prohibition booze can kind of sound, with tinny ‘trumpets’ and sultry vocals. In short, it’s effing fantastic, and once again, it’s only his voice and two sets of loop pedals.

If you’re a fan of the music, you can pre-order his new album, Future Loops, at his website here. There are links to all his social pages as well, so if you’re interested in his process or more of his videos, it’s a great resource. Interested in this process of composing music? I have a ridiculous sense of humour and a brutal sense of honesty- you'll see a lot of that coming through in my writing, so don't say I didn't warn you if I somehow manage to offend you AND hurt your feelings at the same time. On the plus side, it makes my dating and advice columns a lot more pertinent to an unfinished man in the real world.

  1. You know I’ve never been a huge fan of vocal effects, but I can still appreciate this. It’s a pretty solid MGMT cover.
My collegiate a cappella group used to sing this song, so it’s funny to hear this. But it’s a pretty nice arrangement, and Pete obviously knows how to use a loop station. Imogen Heap style.
