The Deebot Ozmo 930: Can It Stand Up to a Pet Hair Household?

As the owner of a cat and a dog, I feel like I spend all of my free time vacuuming up hair. Like most pet owners, I’m constantly on the lookout for ways to make life easier, more convenient, and cleaner. This is what led me to get a Deebot Ozmo 930. An automatic robot vacuum cleaner and floor mopper? Yes, please! I was finally on my way to having the Jetsons-style home I’d always dreamed of!

Unboxing and Setting Up the Ozmo 930
Ecovacs makes an entire lineup of robotic vacuum cleaners, so I had high hopes for the Ozmo 930. Upon opening its outer packaging, I was impressed at how neatly organized everything was inside the box. There was a separate compartment for the various items with graphics that detailed exactly what they were. This made getting everything set up incredibly easy.

First things first: my new helper had to be charged. I was disappointed that I had to wait nearly four hours for it to receive a full charge, but what’s four hours when you have a robot housekeeper? Once it was charged, I downloaded the Ecovacs app to my smartphone (it’s available for both Android and iOS). With the Deebot charged and connected to my wifi, I was fully in control and ready to watch it clean (with my feet propped up and while sipping a drink, naturally).

I had researched robotic vacuum cleaners for a while before deciding on the Ozmo 930, and the thing that most sold me on it is the fact that it doesn’t just vacuum – it mops, too. I’d jumped into the fray and bought one of the original robot vacuum cleaners back when they first came out in the late 90s, but apart from its low suction power, the thing that disappointed me the most was that I still had to go behind the thing and mop. What kind of a housekeeper is that, really?

Deebot promised an entirely new experience: one in which my new little helper can seamlessly switch from vacuum to mop modes, leaving me with gleaming floors without my ever having lifted a finger. “Oh, but you have to lift a finger to turn it on!” you say. Nope. The Ozmo 930 Ecovacs app allows me to schedule when I’d like it to clean. I can wake up to sparkling kitchen floors first thing in the morning or come home from work to a living room rug that looks like my maid was here while I was away.

The mopping functionality is accomplished via a water reservoir located within the machine. It pumps out just enough water to dampen a special microfiber cloth that you affix beneath the machine.

Amazing Functionality
Ok; so the Deebot sounded fabulous, but how would it work? Based on my experience with past robotic vacuum cleaners, I was skeptical. Would it really be able to handle removing pet hair from my carpets? Would it lumber around and miss huge swaths of floor space? Would I arrive home to find puddles of water where the mopping had missed the mark?

Yes, no, and no! I quickly found the Ozmo 930 to be adept at both vacuuming and mopping. First, its smart navigation ensured that it hit every square inch of the area it was set to clean. Its sensors automatically map out the room, allowing it to easily move around furniture and any other obstacles (a sleeping dog?) that get in its way. I can also set virtual boundaries by drawing them out on the app if I want it to avoid a specific area.

The Ozmo did a stellar job of vacuuming my floors, gobbling up crumbs, dust, and pet hair everywhere it went. While no robotic vacuum is going to have the power of a traditional corded one (after all, the robotic vacs have a finite amount of battery power they’re working from), I was pretty impressed. The only issue I ran into was forgetting to pick up all of the clutter from the floor before setting Ozmo zooming around. At one point, it got caught in a string cat toy and let out an “I am suspended” warning before I untangled it. If you’re going to have a robotic maid-helper, you’re going to have to be somewhat tidy to begin with.

The Ozmo 930 automatically detects carpet and avoids it during mopping. This carpet detection technology comes in handy in other ways, as well – it also enables the Ozmo to kick the suction into high gear when it travels onto carpet during vacuuming mode.

The Bottom Line
The three factors that determine whether I’m likely to keep using an item are its ease of use, how well it does its job, and how easy it is to maintain. The Deebot Ozmo rates well on all three with its user-friendliness and the great job it does on both carpet and hard flooring.

Maintaining the Ozmo is a snap, as well. All I have to do is empty the dustbin, rinse out the water tank, and wash the cleaning cloth after each use. I tap out the filter and rinse it (along with the dustbin) once weekly…and that’s it. I find it much easier than lugging out the regular vacuum and mop. I haven’t had to clean the main or side brushes yet, but I’ve toyed around underneath the Ozmo and can see how easy the moving parts are to remove for cleaning.

I must say that I really love my Deebot Ozmo 930 and am looking forward to using this little guy for a long time!
