How to Stand Out on Any Online Dating Service

If you’ve ever looked through some random profiles on an online dating service, you might wonder to yourself whether or not the people were seriously trying to find a partner, or if the profile was just a joke. Granted, these horrible profiles do stand out, but it’s all for the wrong reasons.

You, of course, don’t want to be one of those joke profiles. You want to stand out and be noticed for all the reasons. You’ve got a lot going for you, you’re unique, smart, and much more interesting than the other people on your chosen online dating service. All that’s left is for you actually to show it! Here’s how you can do that!

1. Create a conversation with your profile. If you want people to reach out and message you, you have to give them a reason to want to do that. You have to be as detailed as you can, especially when you are describing things like what you enjoy doing, why you think you’re a great catch, and even when you’re talking about your past experiences.

2. Choose profile pictures that make them take notice. While we understand that not everyone is going to be a supermodel and have a slew of incredible pictures, you do want to make an effort to upload great photos onto your profile. Humans are visual creatures and if they are on a dating service and land on a profile with crappy pictures or none at all, sorry Charlie, but you are going to get passed by. You can avoid that by choosing pictures that have personality, action, and of course, look good.

3. Always proofread your profile. As a member of a dating service, it is your duty to make your profile as readable as possible. If you aren’t the best speller, or if grammar has always been an enemy of yours, maybe you should type your profile in Word first and do a grammar and spelling check. You’ll find that when your profile is devoid of spelling or grammatical errors, you’ll be taken more seriously as a possible suitor. Oh, and this rule also extends to sending messages and any other written interaction with a potential match.

4. Stop putting yourself down. For one reason or another, there’s a lot of people who use a dating service like Hily who will put themselves down, or at the very least, make themselves more boring than they actually are. We never understood this, and we highly recommend that you don’t do it! You might think you’re being humble, but it isn’t an attractive move. In fact, if someone reads the self-deprecating stuff in your profile, they might think you suffer from low self-esteem, or you’ve got a lot of baggage that needs to be dealt with. Your profile should be positive!

5. Always be honest. The most important thing you can do while on a dating service is to be honest, whether you are talking about what you want in life, with a partner, or who are you. People appreciate honesty, and it’s a lot less work telling the truth than it is trying to remember all the small lies you might have had to tell otherwise.
