Official: 2012 BMW 1 Series

We were expecting the new for 2012 BMW 1 Series to be making its debut this year but didn’t think we’ll see it this soon.  It was supposed be shown at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September but a German website called Motor Traffic somehow got their hands on the pictures and some specs on the 2012 BMW 1 Series 5-door.

The current BMW 1 Series is an okay looking car (I’m feeling very generous today) but the 2012 model shown here makes the previous generation car look really good.  The 2012 BMW 1 Series 5-door looks very bloated and a bit bigger, I guess I’ll have to see it in person; maybe it doesn’t look as good in pictures?

According to the German website, the 2012 BMW 1 Series will come with a choice of 1.6 liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engines and 6-cylinder engines.  The 116i 1-Series will be powered by the 1.6 liter engine producing 136 horsepower and the 118i 1-Series will be powered by the same engine but output will be increased to 170 HP, no word on power for the 6-cylinder engine cars.  The 2012 BMW 1 Series will also come with optional 2.0 liter turbo-diesel engines with outputs at 116 HP, 143 HP, and 184 HP.  The car I’m looking forward to is the gasoline powered 118i, that thing should be fun to thrash around the track.

I’m guessing BMW will respond shortly to these leaked images and specs with their official pictures etc., a lot sooner than they had anticipated.
