Dredd Trailer – I’m Dredding Another Terrible Reboot

If you haven’t already heard, it’s true – Judge Dredd is getting a reboot. This time around they’re just calling it Dredd, and based on the trailer that I’ve seen, and that you’re undoubtedly about the watch, you can go ahead and watch The Raid: Redemption immediately and save yourself of the time and emotional energy of watching Dredd.

Arriving later this year, Dredd appears to take parts of other tired movies, and combine them in a way that looks no more interesting than the movies that inspired it. As I already mentioned, if you’ve seen The Raid, I have a feeling that we’ve basically seen this movie as well. But watch the trailer, and judge for yourself.

I really can’t help but question the intelligence of the people green-lighting these movies. Are they brilliant by pandering to what they believe is a massive and seemingly idiotic audience? Are they flat out wrong, possibly placing their bets on a movie that will tank as hard as the original? I honestly don’t know, but what I do know is that I’m even less excited about seeing this than I originally was for the upcoming Total Recall remake. At least that film won me over a bit, with some semblance of an interesting direction, and perhaps a shot of maintaining what made the original so much fun.

I really hope I’m wrong here, and my initial reactions are nothing more than a negative flinch response to a classic film being remade. Maybe the movie really will bring something new to the table, and the use of SLO-MO, but the drug, and the effect used over and over again in the trailer, have only been amped up to catch people’s attention. But I doubt it.

Dredd arrives in theaters this September, and in 3D no less!

  1. man i liked the original one why did they have to go and ruin it… it looks to me like they stole the script from robocop 2 and added some more action to it then mixed up a big bowl of bad movie.

    • RoboCop was a bit of a Judge Dredd rip-off in the first place so seems like poetic justice to use a similar plot to RoboCop 2.
(see RoboCop DVD extras where they talk about originally intending to make a Judge Dredd film but not being able to get the rights)

  2. There have been a quite a few positive reviews for Dredd since it’s preview screening at Comic-Con and I’ve yet to come across a negative one. As I’ve been a fan of Judge Dredd in 2000ad since the mid 80’s this has got me quite excited.
As for The Raid comparisons, they are a bit unfair as Dredd was in post-production before The Raid’s cameras started rolling.

    • If it turns out being good, I’ll be thrilled. The slow motion scenes looked stunning in the trailer. My skepticism stems from the tide of terrible remakes and re-imaginings that studios have churned out over the years.
