So you’ve been looking for a way to get out and have fun, huh? Maybe you’ve just moved to a new town or city and would like to make friends. Maybe you’re living in the same place you have for years, but are on the hunt for something that’s a little more quiet and cerebral than hanging out at a bar and watching sports. We’ve got just the activity for you – and it’s one where you can have fun, meet friends, and maybe even meet that special someone if you’re on the market!
You could join a chess club.
I Could Join a What?
Now wait, wait, wait… When you think of chess clubs, you’re probably imagining the gatherings of awkward teenagers that happened when you were in grade school. Adult chess clubs are on an entirely new level. If you love chess – or even if you only like it and want to learn more about it – these provide a place for people of all skill levels to meet, socialize, and exchange tips and strategies.
Even if you just show up a time or two to give it a try, it’s something completely different! You never know: attending on a whim could turn into a lifetime passion for a game that’s been played across the world for centuries.
How Do Chess Clubs Work?
Chess clubs range from informal gatherings of friends who love the game to formal organizations that charge dues. If you’re a newbie, call up your local chess club and see if you can drop in and give it a try for free. Most chess clubs provide all of the necessary equipment – boards, clocks, etc. – and some of them even offer classes to teach beginners the basics of the game.
Best of all, most of them have some sort of a ranking system that will give you an idea of where you stand in reference to other players. This really ups the ante in terms of competition and gives you the incentive to improve. Once you really start honing your skills, you can even compete in tournaments.
So if you’re tired of the same old loud places and the same old faces, break out of your routine. Consider giving your local chess club a try!
