We’ve written about quite a few street legal electric motorcycles, but CRP racing’s Energica Ego is the first street legal electric superbike. Since this is an electric motorcycle, the saying “loud pipes save lives” goes out the window. The bike does make sound but it’s no rumble of a V-Twin or the whine of an in-line 4.
The Energica Ego is an Italian motorcycle and it does have a bit of Italian design flare to it, it’s an okay looking motorcycle, it’s no Ducati or MV Agusta. The bike is not very light either; we all know battery packs are heavy, weighing 580 pounds. The bike is powered by a 100 kW electric motor with 143 pound-feet (195 Nm) of torque. All that torque is available from 0 rpm, so this thing should take off like a bat outta hell! According to the manufacturer, the 0 – 62 mph (100 km/h) is achieved in 3.7 seconds with an electronically limited top speed of 149 mph (240 km/h).
The Energica Ego comes with a 11.7 kWh battery pack that can be charged in 3.5 hours using a standard outlet. The bike has a pretty decent range; it can go 190 kilometers on a charge at 60 km/h, 150 km at 80 km/h, 100 km at 100 km/h, and about 50 kilometers on the track or if you ride like a hooligan.
Currently there’s only one Energica Ego electric sports bike in the world, full scale production will begin in 2015. The bike will come in Arctic White or Matte Black colors and will be priced at $23,000 US. Via: Energica
