Daddy Do Over

The number of men getting body contouring and facial procedures to enhance their physique has been soaring in the last few years. Just as women turn to procedures such as the ‘mommy makeover’, more men are leaping onto the wagon of the ‘Daddy Do Over’ and embracing their own set of treatments. Just like the ‘mommy makeover’, the ‘Daddy Do Over’ consists of surgical and non-surgical facial and body contouring procedures that can typically be performed in a single surgery.

Men age differently and go through different physical changes from women (who often have to manage pregnancy and post pregnancy), but also a man’s lifestyle typically changes over time. Men in their 20s and early 30s have time to frequent the gym thus keeping them in shape, but then “life happens”. Increasing work pressure, travel and the responsibilities of parenting come along, they forget about the gym, their diet and exercise patterns fluctuate and their bodies give in to the ‘dad bod’. Obviously, they add a certain amount of weight,’ says Dr Kamal Sawan who is an American Double-Board Certified Plastic Surgeon based at Al Shunnar Plastic Surgery Dubai. He adds, ‘the Daddy Do Over comes in when the men are keen to fend off the ‘dad bod’ as they seek not only to have a more contoured masculine body but also to gain more confidence, which will help them to compete and progress in their careers.’

According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, in 2018, more than 1.3 million cosmetic procedures were performed on men. This was an increase of 29 percent since 2000. The most popular procedures for men were fillers and wrinkle reduction injections, gynecomastia, liposuction, tummy tucks, eyelid surgery and nose jobs.

Dr Kamal says that men want to look good at work and on the beach too. After losing weight some men are left with hanging, loose skin around the abdomen, which can be very uncomfortable. With many men wanting a slimmer and masculine look, Dr Kamal himself performs many more tummy tucks and gynecomastias (used in the case of overgrown breasts) in a typical week today than he did 20 years ago.

Dr Kamal and one of his patients were gracious enough to have me in the room during the patient’s consultation and I picked out a few things of what entails in a tummy tuck and gynecomastia procedures.

Patient: What exactly are tummy tuck and gynecomastia procedures?

Dr Kamal: These are two different procedures but they can be paired together and performed during the same surgery to produce a stronger and tighter core that complements the newly formed chest.

A Tummy tuck, also known as an abdominoplasty, is a cosmetic surgical procedure which helps to flatten the abdomen by removing excess fat and skin resulting in a more masculine appearance.

Gynecomastia is a condition in which men’s breasts swell and become abnormally large. Exercise or losing weight does not help with this condition but surgery does. This is done through excision by cutting out the breast tissue or by liposuction. Sometimes both techniques are used. This results in a flatter, more sculpted physique.

Patient: How do I know if I am a good candidate for a tummy tuck and/or gynecomastia?

Dr Kamal: Any patient who is undergoing a cosmetic procedure should be healthy both physically and mentally as well as realistic about the outcome of the results.

A good candidate for a tummy tuck should be of stable weight and have excess fat and skin in the lower abdomen.

As for gynecomastia surgery, the ideal candidate should have overdeveloped breasts and skin that is still elastic to adjust to breast reduction.

Patient: What qualities should I look for in a good Plastic Surgeon?

Dr Kamal: Before settling on a particular Plastic Surgeon, it is good to meet him/her in person and to make sure that they are well trained and Board-Certified to handle the exact procedure that you’re looking to have. In addition to these, ask as many questions as you want and make sure they are answered to the best of your understanding. Also ask for before and after photos of previous procedures similar to the one that you want to have. Due to patient confidentiality, many surgeons don’t publish before and after pictures on the internet, but they are happy to show them to you at the clinic. Above all the surgeon should be helpful, polite and skilled with the knife.
