Until recently, I had never heard the term daycation before. I had heard of mini-retirements, and getaways, and day trips, but never daycations. If you’ve ever taken a day off work to go for a hike, or simply to explore parts of your own city, you’ve taken a daycation. In this interview, travel guru Mike Barish answers my questions about daycations and his suggestions on how to get the most out of your brief escape from the 9-5 grind. 

Since we looked at birds and said, “Pffft, I can do that,” humankind has been obsessed with flight. I’m not talking about airplanes or helicopters, either. I’m talking about full-on, unassisted, Superman-style gliding. However, almost all those attempts have failed, like Icarus or those old 1900s videos of dudes with mustaches building flying machines. There is, however, one extreme sport that allows mere mortals the closest we will ever get to self-propelled flight: a zip line.

When I first heard about this, “Insane in the Membrane” is what came to mind. The EdgeWalk is probably the only cool thing Toronto has to offer and has about the same “shit your pants” factor as skydiving and bungee jumping.

The EdgeWalk attraction opened up to the public on August 1^st and is the world’s highest full circle hands-free walk on a 5 ft. wide ledge encircling the top of the Tower’s main pod. To be clear, this 5 ft ledge has no side rails! Thrill seekers get an opportunity to walk in groups of six while attached to an overhead safety rail via a trolley and harness system. The participants who are crazy enough are allowed to lean back over the edge with nothing but air and amazing views of Lake Ontario 1168 feet beneath them.

Last year I had an opportunity to spend a few days in Amsterdam, and needless to say, it was a fantastic experience. The sights, the sounds, and of course… the plethora of amazing bars and restaurants made it well worth the lengthy flight from Canada. For those of you that haven’t yet had a chance to visit Amsterdam, I wanted to share some photographs that really capture the essence of the city.
