‘Solar Impulse HB SIA’ Solar Powered Airplane

The ‘Solar Impulse HB SIA’ has broken the world record for furthest distance traveled on a solar-powered aircraft.  The 3,700 mile journey was powered by four 10-horsepower motors which were powered by the sun via 11,628 photovoltaic panels. These panels garnered the sun’s energy and are stored using batteries weighing a grand total of 400 kilograms.

Prior to this new world record, the ‘Solar Impulse’ was also the first solar powered aircraft to complete an intercontinental flight when it few from Madrid, Spain to Rabat, Morocco.  Between landings, each leg of the aircraft’s journey consists of approximately 500 miles at an average air speed of 70km/h (44mph). The solar powered aircraft has a wingspan of 63.4 meters while its length is 21.85 meters and 6.4 meters in height. Although those measurements equal to a big plane, the weight is a mere 1600kg (3,520 lbs) thanks to the structure being built out of carbon fiber.

This single seat aircraft is obviously not designed to carry passengers but it does carry a message. Renewable energy sources can be used to provide long distance flight while reducing emissions. We are many, many years away from airliners using such technology but we have to start somewhere, right?
