SimCity Announce Trailer – GDC2012

In a move that surprised absolutely no one, EA announced their upcoming revival of the much loved SimCity series. It’s been almost a decade since Maxis released the last SimCity, and it’s obvious that the new team is making an effort to make this the most beautiful looking SimCity game ever.

Now, unfortunately this isn’t actual gameplay footage, but my guess is that many of the assets seen in the trailer are indeed *from* the game. It’s obviously tough to say how the final product will look, but based on the technology these guys have at their disposable, I’m expecting nothing short of breathtaking. SimCity was one of the first games I played as a teenager, and it’s exciting to see the franchise make the jump to modern generation technology.

My favorite part of the announce trailer is the shot of the stadium. It’s a lively looking place, and the monster truck show is a nice touch. Both the crowd and the giant robot look fantastic, and I’m hoping that we see a lot more people this time around. Cities are busy places, and having a ton of people just wasn’t feasible when the last generation of SimCity games were at their height. I think having crowds of busy people going about their lives would go a long way towards making the world feel more authentic, and more alive.

SimCity Monster Truck Show

Aside from the giant robot, which is awesome in its own right, I really like the big screen on the inside of the stadium. It’s a nice little touch, and I’m hoping we see that included in the actual game. It’s the little details that count, especially in a game like SimCity.

SimCity Statue Unveiling

The lighting in the trailer looks fantastic, and whoever did the cloth tarp covering this creature should receive an award. I’m not joking when I say it’s some of the most realistic cloth I’ve yet seen in anything video game related.

There’s currently no known release date for SimCity, though I imagine we’ll hear more in the coming months. Let’s hope that all the old SimCity 4 cheats work in this latest game.
