Winter Is Coming, Is Your Home Prepared?

No, we’re not talking about the new season of Game Of Thrones. Unfortunately, that doesn’t start until late April. Although, we’ll certainly be setting our cable boxes to record when it begins. Nevertheless, we’re talking about reality for once. Winter may have arrived a little late, but it’s here now, and you need to make sure you are prepared. You need to know your house can handle everything that the season of chills brings.

Flooding

If you don’t get weather that’s cold enough in the winter; you should expect a lot of rain. Depending on what region you live, you could get enough rain to flood an entire garden. Or, a driveway with an awful drainage system. The extra water could even start to seep indoors, through the cracks in your home. We recommend you do check out the exterior of your home before the winter weather shifts into high gear. That way, you should be able to fix any problems with your house.

A thorough inspection should show any issues that need addressing. However if you are worried about flooding, checking out your soil density is a good place to start. If the soil density in your yard is too high, then you will find that water won’t drain away as it should. In the winter, this could cause it to push on the structure of your home. Left alone, you may start to develop problems with dampness and even mold.

Insulation

There is nothing worse than curling up on a cold winter’s night and finding, no matter what you do, you can’t keep warm. Usually, this is an issue with the home insulation. It can be fixed by either modifying the windows or even just buying better, thicker curtains. Failing this, you might want to have a look for cracks on the walls in the inside of your home. This type of poor building work could be letting the warm air escape and the cold air in.

Furnace

Of course, if you are struggling to keep warm through the winter this might also be due to a problem with your home furnace. We suggest you might want to get your furnace checked out as soon as possible. Don’t forget a problem with your furnace could also lead you to use more energy and receive higher energy bills. You don’t want that, especially after spending so much at Christmas. If there is a problem with your heating a good furnace repair company would be your best bet.

Charge Your Accessories

Finally, it’s the time of the year where the power suddenly goes off, leaving you alone in the dark. Not to worry though because now we have wireless chargers. Make sure they are fully stuffed with electricity and you’ll have no problem keeping yourself entertained until the power goes on. Although you probably will have to live without the internet for a few hours. There still isn’t a fix for that!

Don’t Forget About Your Car

Oddly enough, most folks completely neglect their vehicles when winter comes. This can be detrimental, not only to your vehicle, but to your own well-being as well. Most folks probably think getting stuck in the snow is the main thing that can happen. And while yes, knowing how to get your car out of snow and ice is good knowledge, there are plenty of other things you should do in preparation. First and foremost, replace the water in your vehicle’s radiator with antifreeze to prevent sub-freezing temperatures from cracking your engine block. Next, replace your tires if the tread is worn down. It would also be wise to keep an emergency kit stowed away in the trunk. Along with essential medical supplies, this kit should also contain supplies essential to sustain yourself (and any passengers) for a few days.
