Watch Dogs Release Date + Story Trailer

It’s been more than six months since Watch Dogs was supposed to come out.

If you can remember back that far, the Watch Dogs release date was supposed to coincide with the launch of the new consoles, but you know… these things happen sometimes. When a studio delays a game, it’s often because they’ve realized it just needs a little more time. That… or it’s so completely broken that releasing it would probably earn them a speedy lawsuit.

But EA, err… a game company, would never make that mistake!

Anyway, today is a day of joy. I’m happy to announce that the new Watch Dogs release date is May 27th, 2014. I’m telling you this right away because I know that’s what you’re really here for, and the trailer is just a nice bonus.

So on that note, here’s the new Watch Dogs story trailer. While you watch it, I only have one request: see if you notice anything different about Aiden’s face this time around.

It looked a bit different, right?

It’s entirely possible that I’m just imagining it, but I swear Ubisoft changed it around a bit. He looks a lot more like a human now, if that makes any sense. Something about his eyes perhaps? Either way, let me know your thoughts in the comments below. I could just be losing my mind.

Now, let’s talk about the trailer itself.

It looks grim… like, really grim. I mean, the world itself looks quite impressive, but I expect the story is going to be rather dark. A dead wife is one thing – we’ve seen that in Max Payne to great effect – but the human trafficking element is truly sinister.

I like it.

I realize Watch Dogs is “just” a video game, but that doesn’t mean it can’t ask hard questions. In fact, I hope the game makes me feel uncomfortable. Far Cry 3 – another Ubisoft title – did a great job with that, and I’m expecting no less from Watch Dogs. This is the perfect time to broach these topics too. After the Snowden revelations, privacy is on everyone’s mind. Abuses are only becoming easier.

Either way, we’ll find out on May 27th when Watch Dogs finally arrives. Until then, keep coming back for the latest updates. I’m kind of obsessed with this game, so I’ll be sure to post anything I find.

  1. Yep, I think you’re right, they’ve definitely changed it around and added a plot. I saw a demo at Eurogamer expo in London and though it was a shell of a game; great tech and landscapes but nothing to bite into. Hopefully the extra development time has given the game some substance rather than a chance for marketing to gloss it over.

    • Completely agree. I think that if Ubisoft wants Watch Dogs to be as big a franchise as AC has been, they need to make sure this is a solid introduction to the series, and not something they half-assed.
