I never thought of Liam Neeson as much of an action star. I don’t even know why, exactly. Looking through all the movies he’s been in, his career is full of action films, such as Kingdom of Heaven, Seraphim falls (go see it if you haven’t already) and my favorite of all, Taken.
My immediate impression of the Unknown trailer is that director Jaume Collet-Serra is attempting to create a film with the same level of action as Taken, and combine it with some of his more cerebral works… such as… House of Wax…? No, that’s not right; that movie looked terrible, and though I’ve never seen it, the reviews seem to agree with my cursory impression. Having said that, Unknown seems like a step in the right direction. Though the movie appears to borrow the tone and style of Taken, is that really such a bad thing?
Unknown (formally called Unknown White Male) tells the story of an ordinary man (Dr. Martin Harris – Liam Neesen) who has his identity taken in the wake of a terrible car crash. When he awakens from a coma 4 days later, he runs into his wife, who seemingly doesn’t recognize him. The resulting car chases and shootouts seem to indicate that he isn’t happy about the whole affair, and his wife (played By January Jones of Mad Men) is clearly hiding something behind her creepy doll-like face.
