Thief 4 Unveiled – Master Thief “Garrett” Returns

I’ve got some exciting news to share with you today, so I’m going to dive right in here. The long awaited sequel to Looking Glass’ legendary Thief series has finally been confirmed. It’s true folks, Thief 4 is not only on the way, but it’s arriving for PC and next generation consoles in 2014!

And that’s not all of it, check this out… it really is the motherload.

Thief 4 Leaked Screenshots

Though you came for the exciting news, what you really want is some sexy Thief 4 screenshots, hot off the press. They’re even more exciting because they’re leaked. So browse through and let me know what you think when you’re done. I’ve got a few thoughts of my own, so we can compare notes at the end.

If you’ve had a chance to play Dishonored, then this particular shot may look a bit familiar to you. In fact, a  lot of these screenshots probably will, and for good reason. After all, many of the people who worked on the original Thief games – such as Harvey Smith – created the game. That’s a good thing on both counts… I’m all for more high quality stealth games.

This mechanic is fairly obvious… the blue is clearly to highlight the areas that Garrett can search for items, but what about this…?

It’s a bit like a compass, but you know… glowing.

Again, drawing a comparison to Dishonored here, but I’m glad to see Garrett’s hands actually gripping the landscape in first person. This is one of the major improvements we’ve seen with shooters over the last few years, and it’s a welcome one. Back when the Thief games hit the scene, this just wasn’t possible. It’s a small touch, but it makes a huge difference in terms of immersion.

This is the lockpicking mechanic, and hey, it looks great! We’ve seen this done in both the recent Fallout and Elder Scrolls games, but this is probably the best looking implementation that I’ve seen so far. Nice work Eidos.

This looks great, but again… Dishonored, Dishonored, Dishonored… it looks a lot like Lady Boyle’s Last Party, which was a fantastic mission. I hope Thief 4’s equivalent is just as enjoyable.

And here is the hero himself, Garrett, the master thief of the City of Chains. But one question remains, will Stephen Russell be reprising his role as the voice of Garrett? It just wouldn’t be the same experience without him.

Thief 4 Release in 2014

Anything worth saying once is worth saying twice, so I’ll say it again… Thief 4 is really and truly coming out for PC and next generation consoles in 2014. You can stop wishing for another game now, and sleep soundly knowing that we’re really going to see one, and by every account the franchise is in good hands. After all, Eidos did put together Deus Ex: Human Revolution, and you know how much I loved that game.
