While tobacco companies may have spent decades trying to deny it, at this stage there is just no hiding or denying that cigarettes not only significantly increase the risk of cancer, but also cause a laundry list of other health issues. According to the CDC, smoking causes about nine out of ten lung cancer deaths and almost ten times as many Americans have died prematurely from smoking cigarettes than have died in all the wars fought by the US. Cigarette smoking also increases the risk of developing coronary heart disease and stroke by 2 to 4 times. Other health issues caused by cigarette smoking include lung diseases like COPD, emphysema and chronic bronchitis and it can trigger asthma attacks or make them worse in asthmatics.
No matter how you slice it, smoking cigarettes present serious health risks to both smokers and those who have the misfortune to inhale second-hand smoke. Unfortunately, while many people try to quit smoking, they are up against a wide range of challenges. To begin with, cigarettes contain nicotine, which is a highly addictive substance in and of itself. In addition, however, many smokers are actually “addicted” to the ritual of smoking. While they may use a patch that can deliver a dose of nicotine, they still often find themselves craving the soothing ritual that smoking also offers them.
Unlike traditional cigarettes which generate smoke, electronic cigarettes use heat to produce a cloud of vapor out of e-juice, otherwise known as e-liquid. To begin with, nicotine is in and of itself not only an addictive substance, but it can be toxic in large amounts. In addition, it is harmful in even small amounts to babies, children, animals and the elderly. While many public institutions still allow vaping indoors, the truth is that just like cigarette smoking, vaping should be limited to outdoor use.
Once again, however, even though vaping still has some potential health risks, including nicotine poisoning, they are infinitely preferable to all of the associated health risks of smoking tobacco cigarettes.
