Splinter Cell: Blacklist – Less Torture, more Nerve Jabs?

So many video game sequels come out these days that I feel like one day, I’m going to run out of things to say about them. So far that hasn’t been the case, though, as there’s almost always something to complain about. Let’s take Splinter Cell: Blacklist for example, the 108th sequel in the long standing Splinter Cell franchise.

Sam is now younger than ever, proving that with enough money, an organization can do just about anything – including anti-aging treatments that actually work! Sam is also more violent than ever, as we’ve seen in a previous video. He can beat up terrorists with the best of them, including what *appears* to be a sort of quasi torture mini game involving a person’s shoulder blade and a big, sharp knife.

Sam Fisher, the Ghostly Panther of the Night

But we don’t get to see any of that today. No, in this latest non-lethal playthrough of a level in Blacklist, we see a slightly softer side of Sam. I mean, kind of… well, maybe not really. In this little clip – narrated by a fellow who explains that Sam has taken a page out of Twilight’s book and learned to become both a ghost and a panther.

What did you think of the video? If you’re a long time fan of the series, I’m especially curious. I’m happy to see that Sam Fisher has a much wider range of ways not just to kill, but to take them out in a non-lethal way as well. Kristjan Zadziuk really said a whole lot of nothing, but the video spoke for itself anyway.

Ubisoft Toronto is clearly working to flesh out Sam’s skill-set, but I’m saddened to see them introducing what I definitely consider torture, and an even deeper focus on rah rah, go Amurikka!! Isn’t that played out yet? Can’t you come up with something at least vaguely original here? Perhaps I’m alone, but one of these days I would really like to play an action game that involves more than stabbing and blowing away poor people. It’s really not much of a challenge, but then again, neither are most games these days. They’re just about making people feel tough.

Blacklist Release Date

Okay, so supposedly… Splinter Cell: Blacklist is coming out on August 20th, 2013 now. It was recently delayed to this date, and given all the other delays, well… I’m a bit skeptical. In any case, you can now pre-order Blacklist for $59.96 .
